Introduction

Global factors influencing the energy sector are continuously evolving, redefining business strategies and models for companies around the world. In the upstream sector, these shifts necessitate portfolio reconfiguration, technological advancements, and the challenge of maintaining competitiveness in an environment under increasing pressure for sustainability.

This module examines how global trends shape the regional energy landscape, evaluating business strategies, portfolio resilience, and adaptive approaches needed to meet the challenges of the energy transition. Through case studies and interactive exercises, participants will uncover opportunities to enhance value in a rapidly transforming sector.

Course Outline

The first part of the module will provide a comprehensive overview of global factors influencing the upstream sector in the region. Major international and regional trends will be examined, emphasizing shifts in business models, the evolution of corporate strategies, and how companies are adapting to an evolving energy landscape. Additionally, the module will discuss how businesses balance profitability, sustainability, and energy security objectives.

The second part will address the technological and strategic impacts of these changes, including portfolio assessments, low-carbon strategies, and opportunities driven by advances in decarbonization and the energy transition. It will also explore market dynamics and geopolitical risks affecting the region, focusing on how these factors are reshaping sector priorities.

Interactive exercises will complement the module, enabling participants to deepen their understanding of business strategies, assess case studies, and develop tools to manage uncertainty and complexity. These exercises will foster strategic and forward-thinking approaches, guiding participants in designing innovative solutions to current and future challenges in the regional upstream sector.

Bob Fryklund

Vice President and Chief Strategist Upstream Energy | S&P Global Commodity Insights

Bob Fryklund is the Chief Upstream Strategist at S&P Global Commodity Insights. Bob has over 40 years of experience working for majors, independents, and consultancies, with more than half of that in executive leadership roles. He focuses on advising companies, boards and leadership teams on areas that lead to high impact value creation – portfolio’s , IPO’s, restructuring, M&A.

He is globally recognized expert on Upstream and won the AAPG Presidents award for his Thought Leadership. A frequent keynote speaker for both public and private events, he is also a well known moderator and media source.

Bob gives back to the industry via mentoring women leaders and he also sits on multiple industry boards- ARPEL, AAPG CAB, AAPG Trustee Associate. He holds an AB in Geology from Hamilton College and resides in Houston, Texas.

Rodrigo Vaz

Director Upstream Research | S&P Global Commodity Insights

Rodrigo is currently Director of Latin America in the S&P Global Commodity Insights Upstream Research business. He has 22+ years of experience in the Energy Industry.

Prior to joining S&P Global (f.k.a IHS Markit) in 2011, Rodrigo was Manager at Accenture Management Consulting responsible for BD and project management at the O&G business line for 8 years. Prior to Accenture, he worked on the Brazilian Nuclear Quality Institute (IBQN) for 4 years, responsible for consulting projects and quality auditing at Nuclear Energy sector in Brazil.

Rodrigo holds a graduation degree in Civil / Industrial Engineering from the PUC-RJ University, an MBA in Management from FGV-RJ University and a Post-Graduation in Energy Industry Economics from COPPEAD/UFRJ University. His background also includes international certifications from PMI and APICS institutes
