Taller virtual: “Mercados Voluntarios de Carbono”

El Comité de Transiciones Energéticas de Arpel realizó a comienzos de agosto, con el apoyo del IAPG, un taller virtual dedicado a “Mercados Voluntarios de Carbono”, el cual contó con la participación de más de 110 profesionales de las principales compañías del sector energético.

La actividad contó con la disertación de Camilo Trujillo de la International Emissions Trading Association (IETA); Paola Visca de la Dirección Nacional de Cambio Climático en Uruguay, y Manuel García, coordinador de proyecto “Apoyo al proceso de implementación de la NDC en Perú” del Ministerio del Ambiente de Perú.

La moderación estuvo a cargo de Irene Alfaro, Directora Gerente de Arpel  y coordinadora del Comité de Transiciones Energéticas.

Los mercados de carbono son una herramienta estratégica para impulsar el proceso de descarbonización global y cumplir con el objetivo del Acuerdo de París.

Actualmente, no existe un mercado global pero se están negociando sus condiciones en el marco del Acuerdo de París, artículo 6. En la COP27 realizada a fines de 2022 se acordaron los principales aspectos para la implementación de los mercados voluntarios (artículo 6.2) y ya existen varias iniciativas en implementación, en particular hay dos en América Latina entre Suiza y Perú, y entre Suiza y Uruguay.

América Latina emite el 22% de los créditos de carbono globales. Dentro de la región, Colombia es el país que más emite estos créditos, le siguen Brasil, Perú, Uruguay, Chile y México, en ese orden.

Los acuerdos entre Perú-Suiza y Uruguay-Suiza son marcos generales a nivel nacional que permitirán que las empresas de diferentes sectores en esos países puedan comprar-vender créditos de emisiones que aportarán a las NDC del país que compra los créditos.
