Soil contamination resulting from oil industry operations represents a challenge for the sector which
goes beyond the actions of the environmental divisions of companies. Although ARPEL, through the
Environment, Health and Safety Committee (CASYSIA), had considered this issue through Guidelines
on Best Practices, Workshops, and Direct Technical Assistance, the issue has evolved in technical,
management, technological, training, economic, social and regulatory aspects that are to be considered
as a whole to favor the sustainability of the business, and warranted a Workshop for the exchange of
experiences and information.
A Workshop took place on the occasion of the annual CASYSIA meeting held in Fortaleza, BRAZIL on
October 25-26 under the sponsorship of PETROBRAS, where 8 case studies from different ARPEL
Member Companies were presented. After the presentations, a session of working groups was held
where participants identified existing gaps to consider environmental site assessment and remediation
with a scientific approach, on a cost-effective basis and based on risk management.
