Meeting sustainable development criteria is an essential element in the approval process of Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) projects. Sustainable development requires making informed choices based upon the integration of economic, environmental and social considerations into the decision making process. In the context of developing CDM projects, the project developer, the Designated National Authority, and other stakeholders need to work together to develop a common understanding of the types of indicators of sustainable development appropriate for project review and approval. The Regional Association of Oil and Natural Gas Companies in Latin America and the Caribbean (ARPEL) recognizes the need to develop this common understanding.
