NEW ARPEL PUBLICATION: PROCESS SAFETY SELF-ASSESSMENT TOOL

  • ARPEL published the second edition of the "Process Safety Self-Assessment Tool and Methodology". This tool allows to identify gaps and obtain a clear view of the strengths and vulnerabilities of the Process Safety Management Systems, both at the corporate level and at the upstream, midstream and downstream facilities of the oil and gas industry.

Since its first publication in 2018, the first edition of this tool has been used in several of our member companies’ operational sites, and feedback and suggestions for improvement have been collected to increase its added value.

All the use experience generated was included in this second edition. The tool keeps the same structure, with 21 questionnaires associated to 4 main pillars (Leadership and Culture; Risk Identification and Analysis; Risk Management; Assessment and Continuous Improvement), and it also includes several improvements:

    - Optimized questionnaires

    - Several recommendation sections to help companies and assessment teams implement the tool:

    • Recommendations for choosing the type of assessment.

    • Recommendations on the members of the assessment team.

    • Instructions on the documentation required for each element.

    • Instructions on the evaluation of the development level achieved in each item.

The document is the result of the work of a consultant team from the ARPEL's member company TEMA, in addition to the follow-up and contributions from the Process Safety Team of ARPEL's Health, Environment and Industrial Safety Committee.

After having completed the publication stage, the focus is now on promoting its use in member companies, thus helping to create safer facilities in the energy sector in Latin America and the Caribbean.
