CCUS and Geothermal Energy in Latin America: ARPEL - Sproule Webinars

  • In accordance with the agenda of activities related to Energy Transitions -one of ARPEL’s four strategic vectors-, a series of webinars on energy transition in Latin America was held in conjunction with the company Sproule.

The first webinar took place on May 18 and dealt with the role and opportunities of CO2 storage (CCUS) in Latin America, taking advantage of the current knowledge about the oil fields.

Richard Hares, Carbon Management Manager at Sproule, gave the talk entitled “Unlocking the potential of CCUS in Latin America: leveraging decades of reservoir knowledge”.

Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage (CCUS) is becoming a critical component for any country or industry to consider as part of an overall strategy to mitigate emissions.

Hares discussed strategies for reducing project risk and defining profitable CCUS business models for the emerging and uncertain CCUS sector in Latin America, applying lessons learned from North America.

The second webinar was held on June 1st and focused on opportunities for power generation through geothermal energy.

The lecture was given by Floris Veeger, Managing Director of Geothermal at Sproule, who shared his experience in the implementation and management of geothermal operations.

Geothermal energy production is a key potential growth opportunity in Latin America and the Caribbean, several sites are already in operation and more than a dozen projects have already been announced.

The two virtual meetings were moderated by Tiphaine Le Moënner, Senior Project Manager at ARPEL.
