ARPEL presented its RETOS tool in the 2014 IOSC

  • In the context of the 2014 International Oil Spill Conference, ARPEL officially launched the upgraded “Oil Spill Response Planning and Readiness Assessment Manual” and its assessment tool called RETOS.

ARPEL was co-sponsor of the 2014 IOSC, which was held on May 5-8, 2014 in Savannah, Georgia (USA) where 2000 oil industry experts participated.

The IOSC aims at fostering the exchange of ideas and experiences among government agencies, researchers and industry about the best practices in oil spill response.

ARPEL´s Upstream Director Miguel Moyano, claimed that “it is essential for the association to be able to participate in this conference because it is an opportunity to demonstrate ARPEL´s proactivity in oil spills management to the international community.”

Regarding RETOS tool, Moyano said that “it is a very strong and flexible tool that is used to identify the gaps of the oil spill response programs based on criteria established by the best practices identified by governments and industry experts. In addition, the Manual and RETOS provide more than 150 best practices references available on Internet with practical information to bridge the gaps identified in the assessment.”

The Manual and RETOS were developed by ARPEL in 2011 and they have been used by companies, governments and international programs.

Besides the use in Latin America and the Caribbean, RETOS is going to be used as an assessment tool for the Global Initiative for Western and Central Africa (GI-WACAF) and for the South East Asian (GI-SEA) as well as for the Oil Spill Preparation of the Regional Initiative (OSPRI) in Caspian Sea and Black Sea.
