Arpel was invited to participate in the I Peruvian Gas and Oil Congress, organized by the College of Engineers of Peru and the Peruvian Institute of Gas, Oil and Energy Engineers under the motto “Proposals to make investments in hydrocarbon exploration and production attractive within the energy transition in Peru.” The event took place from October 21 to 23 at the headquarters of the Departmental Council of Lima.

During the opening, Carlos Garibaldi, Executive Secretary of Arpel, gave a keynote talk on “Energy Transition: The Meaning for the Exploration and Production of Oil and Natural Gas in Latin America and the Caribbean.”

In his presentation, Garibaldi maintained that despite the improvement in energy efficiency, economic growth demands more energy and the contribution of renewables remains relatively marginal. He added that “transitions must be accelerated, but since alternative energies are not yet fully scalable, we must continue to provide energy security.”

Garibaldi indicated that “under any scenario, oil and gas will be needed” and that natural gas is the ideal fuel for the transition since it complements renewable energies.

“The oil and gas sector has the experience and capacity for technological innovation to continue offering energy security while being an unavoidable protagonist of the transition,” he said.

Regarding the role of the States, Garibaldi pointed out that “the business sector leads investment in decarbonization, but the State must enable it by offering an attractive ecosystem. Each country must internally agree on a clear state policy, long-term and immune to electoral and ideological swings.”

In closing he expressed that “transitions must be plural, just and inclusive, respecting particularities”; “It is a transition, not an abrupt replacement.”

Within the framework of the I Peruvian Gas and Oil Congress, Arpel provided a Workshop for journalists in which Garibaldi delved into the topic “Energy Transition: Urgency, Aspirations, Alternatives, Uncertainties and Boundary Conditions - the case of Latin America and the Caribbean.

The Workshop was very well received by the local media.

The third activity carried out by Arpel during his visit to Lima last October was a conference for undergraduate and graduate students of the National University of Engineering, organized by the SPE UNI Student Chapter.
