ECOPETROL HOLDS A VIRTUAL MEETING ON WATER USE IN REFINERIES

  • Ecopetrol professionals gave a presentation at a virtual workshop organized by ARPEL’s Refining Committee on July 1 on the integrated management of water use in refineries.

Since fresh water is a very important supply in refineries, both from a volumetric and process point of view, technicians from Ecopetrol’s refineries gave a presentation on the actions they are currently taking and their future plans to optimize its use and achieve neutrality in water use.

Water is used in refineries as steam to drive turbines and for processing purposes, and in liquid form for washing crude oil, cleaning facilities and equipment, and mainly to cool down the final products.

Water is not consumed in the process and is returned back to the environment, which requires a treatment system for the so-called liquid effluents, in order to comply with government regulations, among other goals.

Therefore, reducing water use to the minimum is key, not only for cost reasons, but also in pursuit of environmental preservation.
